How Do We Honor Veterans?

Heritage Hospice, Inc. staff is proud to have achieved Level Five—the highest level— in the “We Honor Veterans Program.” This national program guides our hospice in how to provide the best end-of-life care possible to veterans in Boyle, Garrard, Lincoln and Mercer Counties. 

  • To better serve veterans Heritage Hospice, Inc. has:
  • Added a military history checklist to medical records.
  • Pairs veteran volunteers with veteran patients when possible.
  • Honors veterans with certificates and pinning.
  • Educates staff about topics related to care of veterans, such as seeking veteran benefits and opportunities like the Honor Flight to see monuments in Washington, D.C.
  • Hosts an annual Veterans Appreciation Day to honor all veterans.

How Does Hospice Work with the VA?

Hospice care is paid for by the department of veterans affairs. The veteran may be at home with care provided by Heritage Hospice, Inc. or at the inpatient hospice unit at the VA Medical Center. VA hospice care is a benefit given to all veterans with the following requirements:

  • Veteran must be enrolled in VA system
  • Veteran must have DD214-honorable discharge papers
